The establishment of this museum was initiated by Prof. Drg. RG Indrayana (late) and Prof. Ir. Moeso Soeryowinoto (late). Both were lecturing professors of the Faculty of Biology UGM.
Initially, the collections of the museum were a merger between the collections of the Museum of Zoologicium organized by Prof. Drg. RG Indrayana (late) and the Museum of Herbarium organized by Prof. Ir. Moeso Soeryowinoto (late).
Since 1956, the two museums have been under the management of Faculty of Biology UGM. Yogyakarta, which at that time was still located in Ndalem Mangkubumen, Ngasem, Kondang, that was called the Faculty of the Ngasem complex.
In subsequent developments, initiated by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Ir. Suryo Adisewoyo (late) and in coinciding with the Anniversary of the Faculty of Biology UGM, on September 20, 1969, the Museum of Biology that was located on Jalan Sultan Agung N0.22, Mergangsan District, Yogyakarta was inaugurated.
The museum was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Soeroso H, Prawirohardjo, MA (late), the Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada and opened for public on January 1, 1970.
From 1969 to 2001, the management was carried out by Drs. Anthon Sukahar as the head of the implementation team as well as the first Head/Director of the Museum.
Subsequently, the next Head of the Museum was Lecturers of the Faculty of Biology UGM appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology UGM under a Dean’s Decree.
